Boys and Girls Club Event 11.13 & Hospital for Special Surgery 10.21

In 2013, I was named Health and Fitness Ambassador of the Boys and Girls Club in New Jersey serving as a role model, mentor, and fitness and nutrition coach to more than 73,000 kids throughout NJ. But my relationship with this organization started way before that! I was actually one of those kids back in my hometown of Terre Haute, Indiana not too long ago.

I came from a simple and humble family that didn’t have a lot of material things. But thanks to my parents, what we did have was a firm footing in the belief that we were put on this earth to be good people and to help others. We were very rich in our hearts, and  our values were the same as the Boys and Girls Club. My parents decided it was a great place for us to learn and grow – and to also get rid of all that energy through the after school activities they offered.

I can still remember my afternoons at the club as a young boy. It was lots of fun, and it was a place where I found older people to look up to and aspire to be. It is very humbling to think that now I am one of those mentors.

I love my work with BGCNJ. And one of my favorite times of the year is mid- November when they hold their annual concert for kids. This year, The 12th  Annual Concert for Kids is scheduled for Thursday, November 13, 2014,  and will feature a fun night of Jazz & Soul with the Christian McBride Band, Fantasia, Philip Bailey and Jose James. It’s being held at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, NJ with a  VIP reception at 5:30pm and the concert at 8pm.

I will be there and I have two tickets to give away to the event! If anyone out there is a Boys and Girls Club alum, share your experience with the club in the comment section below. We will conduct a random drawing amongst all who share – and we will post our winner right here on Monday, November 10th. Can’t wait to see you there!

Additionally, I will be grabbing my kryptonite and suiting up in blue to celebrate Halloween a little early this year at  NYC’s Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS)  with pediatric patients in their Lerner Children’s Pavilion on Tuesday, October 21st from 2-3:30. I am also going to take over the HSS Instagram account during my visit to share photos of all the kids. Check it out at @hspecialsurgery and join me by tagging your own Superman photos: #SuperSteveHSS
